Vellore Fort has stood since around 1566 CE, raised by the Vijayanagara chieftains Chinna Bommi Nayak and Thimma Reddy Nayak. Bijapur sultans, Marathas, Mughals, Arcot Nawabs and finally the British all held these granite walls in turn — the temple inside was even turned into a granary for a time before the Marathas restored it and raised its gopuram. The British imprisoned Tipu Sultan's family here, and in 1806 the fort's own sepoys rose against them in one of India's earliest revolts.
But your family tells a story the history books don't: that when the great moat was dug against invaders, a golden chariot went into the water with it — hidden, and never raised again.
